SECTION 4: THE VERB TO BE

'To be' as in I am, you are, etc is one of the most important verbs in
almost any language, so here it is in Bulgarian. In the process of
studying them, we'll also get introduced to personal pronouns, i.e.
I,
you, he/she
, etc. So here we go:

TO BE

  • I am  -------------------> Аз съм [ ahz sum]
  • You are (singular)----> Ти си [ tee see]
  • He is -------------------> Той е [ toy eh]
  • She is ------------------> Тя е [ tya eh]
  • It is ---------------------> То е [ toh eh]

  • We are ---------------------------> Ние сме [ nieh smeh]
  • You are (plural & polite) -------> Вие сте [vieh steh]
  • They are --------------------------> Те са [ teh sah]

To create the negative form, put '
не' (as in the Bulgarian for 'no') in
front of the verb 'to be', as follows:

  • I am not -------------------> Аз не съм [ahz neh sum]
  • You are not (singular)----> Ти не си [tee neh see]
  • He is not -------------------> Той не е [toy neh eh]
  • She is not ------------------> Тя не е [tya neh eh]
  • It is not ---------------------> То не е [toh neh eh]

  • We are not --------------------> Ние не сме [nieh neh smeh]
  • You are not (plural & polite) --> Вие не сте [ vieh neh steh]
  • They are not -------------------> Те не са [teh neh sah]
