SECTION 3 EXERCISES:

Before we do the exercises, let's just remind ourselves what we've learnt in this section. If you want you can
print these pages. You will probably have to print the page in Landscape page layout as it is quite wide, so
please change your printing settings before printing this page and check the Print Preview before you print.

Genders: Feminine, masculine & neuter:

  • Feminine gender nouns usually end in the vowel "a" and "я"
  • Masc. nouns, on the other hand, usually end in a consonant
  • Neuter nouns usually end in the vowels "e", "o" and "и"

You will be mostly right in guessing genders using these rules, although as we know in language every rule has
exceptions.

Indefinite articles or a/an as in a man, an aeroplane, etc.:

No actual equivalent of 'a' and 'an' --> One option is to use the word 'one' as in one man, one aeroplane:

  • "one" referring to masc. nouns - един [eh din]
  • "one" referring to fem. nouns - една [eh dnah]
  • "one" referring to neuter nouns - едно [ehd noh]

Definite articles or the as in the man, the aeroplane, etc.:

With the following exercises you can either:
1. print the exercises at home and write on your own printout:

2. or simply write the answers on a piece of paper and compare with the answers afterwards

Let's try to guess what gender these foreign words are. Write the meaning in English (which you will no doubt be
able to guess if you read the word out loud) and write M, F or N, respectively for Masculine, Feminine or Neuter
gender after the word.

1. Кока Кола - ........................................

2. гангстер - ...........................................

3. видеокамера - ....................................

4. хотел - ...............................................

5. шоколад - ..........................................

6. водка - ..............................................

7. имейл - .............................................

8. Ферари - ..........................................

9.  коктейл - ........................................

10. Барби - ..........................................

Now let's do the same as in Exercise 1 but with these Bulgarian words. All these words have been used in the
previous sections 1, 2 and 3. Once again write the meaning of the words in English plus M, F or N depending on
whether the words are Masculine, Feminine or Neuter gender.

1. жена - ............................................

2. самолет - ........................................

3. стол - ..............................................

4. мъж - .............................................

5. име - .............................................

6. дете - ............................................

7. маса - ...........................................

8. столче - ........................................

9. художничка - ........................................

10. лък - ........................................

Translate the following phrases from English into Bulgarian, paying attention to the fact that while in English
there is one word for "one", there are 3 words for "one" in Bulgarian depending on whether the noun is in
masculine, feminine or neuter gender.

1. one woman - ........................................

2. one girl - ..............................................

3. one man - ............................................

4. one boy - .............................................

5. one child - ............................................

Now this may look difficult but I am sure you will be able to manage it. Refer to the definite article table above for
help. So let's add definite articles to the words in exercise 2. We have done the first one for you. One more thing,
for masc. nouns, please do only ът or ят endings for now, i.e. the endings for when the noun is a subject.

1. жена - жената

2. самолет - ........................................

3. стол - ..............................................

4. мъж - .............................................

5. име - .............................................

6. дете - ............................................

7. маса - ...........................................

8. столче - ........................................

9. художничка - ........................................

10. лък - ........................................

And finally, let's do the same with the foreign words from exercise 1 - let's add definite articles to them.
We've done the first one for you as it is in fact a bit odd too. One more thing, for masc. nouns, please do only ът
or ят endings for now, i.e. the endings for when the noun is a subject.

1. Кока Кола - Кока Колата

2. гангстер - ...........................................

3. видеокамера - ....................................

4. хотел - ...............................................

5. шоколад - ..........................................

6. водка - ..............................................

7. имейл - .............................................

8. Ферари - ..........................................

9.  коктейл - ........................................

10. Барби - ..........................................
